  • Low Tax
  • Medium Tax
  • High Tax
  • No Tax
While residents of a handful of states consider them lucky to have no income tax, most of the states with no income tax have a sales tax, and many that have an income tax have both sales and income taxes. What the sales tax is on varies by state — some tax all purchases, others exclude certain items such as groceries, and others only tax certain luxury goods.

Just five states have no income tax. Sales taxes are generally higher in the eastern half of the country with Florida notably making up for not having an income tax with a 6% state sales tax that applies to nearly all purchases including those made by millions of tourists per year. Delaware does the opposite with no sales tax in part thanks to fees paid by the thousands of corporations that choose to register in the state. To the west, California stands out with one of the highest state sales tax rates in the country at 7.5%. Alaska, on the other hand, is so financially sound that it doesn’t just skip a sales tax — it pays its residents an annual dividend from the state’s oil production.
