Federal income taxes may dominate the headlines but residents of all but seven states face a state income tax bill in addition to their federal taxes. State income tax rates range from the lowest bracket of 0.3% in Wyoming to the highest bracket of 13.3% in California. As with federal taxes, the brackets vary with income and those with lower incomes may have enough exemptions or deductions to avoid paying state income taxes.

Income taxes are generally highest in the Northeastern United States. To avoid them, move south or west. Just don’t go too far west — the three highest tax brackets are found in California, Oregon, and Hawaii. For those looking for an ocean view with no income taxes, just three options are available — Alaska, Florida, and Washington.

Of course, when deciding where to move, remember that higher property taxes, higher sales taxes, or lower earning potential could offset any income tax savings. And don’t think commuting across state lines will avoid income taxes — many states tax both their residents and commuters working in the state, so this move could actually lead to paying income tax in two states.
